Sheep and Elk and Bears, Oh My

_msw99521

Quite a first day…we saw Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Elk and Black Bears along the road.  The ram in the picture above, wearing the stylish tracking collar, was digging a hole in search of antifreeze.  Biologists guess that they are looking for sodium but no one knows why the antifreeze doesn’t appear to harm the sheep.

These two Cow Elk were like many we observed today, grazing and in no apparent hurry to get anywhere. The Elk here are currently shedding their winter coat.

We had three bear sightings today, this Black Bear was very interested in the grass along the park road.  Perhaps it was in search of salt which may have been applied to the road this past winter. Eventually, it headed back into the woods after a lot of grass munching.

    Glacier National Park

Today, I traveled to Montana to attend Moose Peterson’s Wildlife Photographer Base Camp, a 5 day workshop to be held in and around Glacier National Park.  The workshop is based in St. Mary which is on the east side of the park.  Driving from the airport, you first encounter the west side of the park.  The photo above is from the shore of Lake McDonald, which is at the west entrance to Glacier.  It’s an impressive sight and a first look at the grandeur of this park.  Looks like a great 5 days are in store.

Today was the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure in Washington, D.C. I participated in my fourth walk, joining thousands of fellow participants and cancer survivors on the National Mall.  Before the ‘race’ started, the crowd was entertained by a number of speakers. A surprise  was in store as Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill took to the stage to address the crowd.
