Fall leaves

_MSW5578A rainy and breezy weekend made staying indoors sound like a good idea. I decided to stick close to home and experiment with some images of leaves that had been knocked down over the last couple of days. I searched the front yard  for different compositions and found a couple of nice, colorful choices, using both 105mm macro and 24-70mm lenses.

    Wet feet

_MSW5416This morning wrapped up the photography workshop in Vermont.  Once again, fog has hugging the landscape as we headed to Brandon Gap on Rt. 73.  However, we decided to pull off the road to catch the dramatic clouds that were happening around us.  When the fog lifted a little, the hillside scene above appeared.

_MSW0300The last stop in the workshop was a stream along a park road.  The color was outstanding and the overcast conditions allowed some nice water images.  We photographed the area for some time, with most shots requiring getting our feet wet and placing our tripods in the middle of the stream.

_MSW0341That wrapped up a great workshop by Mountain Trail Photography led by a very talented photographer, Joseph Rossbach who is also an outstanding teacher.  If you want to increase your photographic skills in great locations, these workshops are highly recommended.

Additional photos from Vermont are posted here.

      Day 3 like day 2

_MSW9280Day 3 of the workshop started much like day 2….with a lot of fog and wet weather.  We drove to Lefferts Pond adjacent to Chittenden Reservoir in the Green Mountains and found the scene above just before sunrise. After sunrise, the fog lifted and the morning turned sunny, revealing the surrounding landscape.

_MSW9784Before leaving this area we had a chance to work on some macro photography, including the spider web below holding on to the beads of water from the morning rain. I arranged my shot to include the fall color in the background.

        Fog and water

_MSW4971Day 2 of the workshop started early and in a light rain.  Driving up a hillside our workshop lead, Joe Rossbach, spotted a nice composition of trees in the morning fog.  Later in the afternoon, we searched for covered bridges and found one near a grist mill which was fed by by a large stream surrounded by great tree color.

_MSW9185In the early evening we photographed a waterfall under heavy overcast skies which helped bring out the color in the scene and allowed longer exposure times to capture the rushing water.

          A good start

          _MSW9074

The workshop got off to a great start as we headed to Moss Glenn Falls.  The falls are a popular tourist site, located just a few feet off a main road. We may head back here if there is a hard rain to see the change in the falls.  The rest of the day we roamed the countryside stopping to photograph the color of the surrounding hills.

Hi Mike, I like this shot of Moss Glenn Falls as most of my shots of the Falls were tightly cropped but I love the way you’ve used the boulder in the foreground and the lead up to the Falls. I did not see that at all amongst the bustle of tourist snappers not to mention rain 8)). Beautiful.

Thanks Roger for the nice comments. There WERE lots of tourists, not to mention the cars speeding by!!

          Fall in New England

          _MSW9010

I’m in Vermont for the next couple of days attending a photography workshop.  Before the workshop started, I went out this morning to get a glimpse of the scenery.  The trees are changing into their autumn colors with some areas around here almost at peak color.  The streams are full after several days of rain, that will make the waterfalls nice.  So it looks like it’s going to be a great couple of days shooting photos.

            Morning in SNP

_MSW8718The alarm went off at 5AM this morning so that I could make the drive to Shenandoah National Park to catch the sunrise.  The first east-facing overlook was 10-12 miles from the entrance and I made it there with about 2 minutes to spare before the sun appeared above the horizon. It was a great morning in the park, the last summer flowers are in bloom mixed in with the fall color which is just now coming out.

There were plenty of deer, I counted a total of 42 on or alongside the road as I drove through the park. Also saw some wild turkeys and a lot of courageous squirrels standing in the roadway.
